Why Hypnosis?
All of our feelings and experiences since leaving our mother's womb are stored in the memory banks of our unconscious minds. This is where all our answers lie to our current behaviors that don't serve us well anymore.
There is a “positive intention” (or a good reason), behind every behavior we exhibit, even when those behaviors may be inappropriate, dysfunctional, or even self-destructive. These “parts” or positive intentions are “contracts” that were originally made by our unconscious minds in our younger years as a way to protect ourselves and help us to survive. Since these “contracts” were formed and “frozen” in our younger years when we were thinking in very concrete, black and white terms, they have become very rigid over the years, causing dysfunctional behaviors that can now be self-destructive in our adult lives.
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is an accelerated change therapy because of its immediate potential to create change. Because of this phenomenon, the course of therapy can be much shorter in duration. The client can make specific changes in relation to particular problem issues or behaviors each individual session, whereas talk therapy can take years to make a “cognitive shift”, (that process necessary to make a behavioral change).
Hypnosis is a method to find different ways of breaking these old, rigid patterns that don’t serve us well any more, and transforming them into more healthy, flexible ways of looking at ourselves and the world around us. It is a way of getting in touch with one’s internal creative resources and then activating those resources to our advantage in a positive, proactive way.
Hypnosis is a natural state of mind that we experience all the time. Have you ever experienced driving in your car and “forgetting” certain parts of the drive because you are not conscious of what’s going on around you for brief stretches of time? This is a form of hypnotic trance. When you're involved in some means of soothing yourself, (i.e., soaking in a bathtub, lying on a beach, watching TV for more than 1/2 hour, etc., you are in a form of trance.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is the process of applying positive suggestions to transform those negative elements that are “driving” a particular dysfunctional behavior or problem, allowing a more beneficial and positive outcome to emerge.
Hypnotherapy supports the idea that we as individuals all have our own answers. It is about being more alert, more aware, but in a relaxed way. When you are in trance, you are more in touch with your emotions, imagination, and intuition, all those things you need to be in contact with to change your problem behaviors.
“Can I be made to do things against my will?”
No. You could never be made to do anything against your will or contrary to your value system. A person will only act upon suggestions that serve them in some way or reinforce an expected behavior, anything else their subconscious will just ignore.
“Is Hypnosis dangerous?
Absolutely not! Hypnosis has been approved by the Council of Mental Health of the American Medical Association as a safe practice with no harmful side effects.
