Assess Your Stress Now
Why I suggest to Assess Your Stress Now is because if you want to change the difficulties in your life and resolve the issues that are causing pain and dysfunction for you, you have to start doing something different than what you have been doing.
Over the last couple of months some of my clients have made reference to what they called "being under the gun". When I asked them what they meant by this they said that they are in 40’s (and 50’s) and are still either overweight because of their dysfunctional eating patterns or continue to get stressed out without knowing any real ways to get relief or release their stress. In both cases they knew this was a “loaded gun” because if they continued these behaviors in the same manner into the future their later years would be plagued with various problems and they would have to suffer the consequences of getting older because the problems they are currently experiencing will only compound themselves and add to their accumulation of problems.
And, it’s true. I don’t want to scare you, but then again I do because it’s been my experience in the helping field that most people are not motivated or inspired to change unless the negative outweighs the positive, unless people actually get into some kind of crisis that they don’t know how to figure out, deny, or avoid anymore. Over the years I’ve noticed that a lot of people don’t come into therapy until they are older, when their dysfunctional behaviors start to get out of control. So, most of my clients are in their 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s, now willing to work on their issues because they almost don’t have a choice now because their dysfunctional issues are causing too many problems.
If you don’t believe me when I say that our dysfunctional issues do compound over time and do get worse if we don’t deal with them, I invite you to learn about the Adverse Childhood Experiences study (ACEs). This study is already 20 years long and will continue through the lifetimes of those participating in it. It already shows how our adverse experiences in childhood form a foundation and then influence us for the rest of our lives mentally, emotionally, physically, financially and general quality of life, including illness, disease and early death.
What was your childhood like? Whatever it was like, it was the foundation for the rest of your life and, gone unchecked will help you to become a statistic like those in the ACEs study.
But your "foundation" is not a death sentence. Your brain's plasticity can be changed by doing certain things and using methods that will release these negative elements in your foundation that will cause you problems in the future. But you have to start releasing your stress to make a difference.
I don’t mean to worry you or stress you out more by talking doom and gloom but I am trying to make you aware that you can change things. It’s a lot like the movie “Scrooge”, who spends most of his life being grumpy, selfish and mean until he has the 3 spirits of Christmas visit him. These spirits scare him into realizing if he doesn’t do something about his life now, he will suffer even more negative consequences in his future. This series of experiences totally woke him up to make him see the error of his ways and helped him to magically release his angst so he could thoroughly enjoy the rest of his life.
